We’ve all been there. You’re trying to get through your workday, enjoy a meal with your family, or just relax at home, but there it is: a dull, persistent ache in your temples or a sharp pain at the base of your skull. You reach for the pain reliever, maybe a cold compress, and hope it just goes away. Headaches are incredibly common, and we often blame them on stress, sinus issues, or not enough sleep. And sometimes, that’s exactly the cause. But if you find yourself reaching for that relief day after day, week after week, there might be a surprising culprit to consider: your smile.
At Pioneer Valley Dental Arts in Longmeadow, we always look at the big picture of your health. That’s why a TMJ evaluation is a standard part of every new patient’s comprehensive exam. You might be surprised to learn that the source of your chronic headaches could be sitting right in your own jaw.

The TMJ Connection
Let’s talk about your TMJ. That stands for your temporomandibular joint, the hinge that connects your jawbone to your skull. You have one on each side of your face, and you use them hundreds, if not thousands, of times a day whenever you talk, chew, or swallow.
When this complex system of joints, muscles, and ligaments isn’t working in harmony, it creates a condition we call TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder). And one of the most common, yet overlooked, symptoms of TMD is chronic headaches.
Think about it this way: Your jaw muscles are some of the most used muscles in your entire body. When they are constantly tight or strained from an uneven bite or nighttime clenching, that tension has to go somewhere. It often radiates outward, causing pain in your temples, cheeks, and even down into your neck and shoulders.
What Causes Jaw Tension?
So, what makes this joint go out of sync? A few common things we see in our Longmeadow office every day include:
- Teeth Grinding (Bruxism): Many people grind or clench their teeth at night without even realizing it. This puts immense pressure on the jaw joints and muscles all night long, leading to a tired, sore jaw and a pounding headache in the morning.
- Stress: Life in western Mass. can get busy! When we’re stressed, we often hold tension in our jaws without thinking about it, clenching during a tough meeting or while stuck in traffic.
- An Uneven Bite (Malocclusion): If your teeth don’t come together properly, your jaw muscles have to work overtime to try and find a comfortable resting place. This constant micro-adjustment can lead to significant muscle fatigue and pain.
What a Headache from TMD Feels Like
It’s not always easy to tell a TMD headache from a tension headache, but there are clues. You might notice:
- Pain that feels like a dull ache around your temples or the back of your head.
- Soreness or popping sounds in your jaw joint when you open wide.
- Pain that radiates down into your neck or shoulders.
- It’s often worse in the morning (if you’re grinding at night) or gets worse as the day goes on.
Finding Relief, Close to Home
The good news is that you don’t have to just live with it. Because these headaches have a physical source in your jaw, we can often treat them with a dental solution. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, a visit to our office is a great place to start.
During your visit, we’ll do a thorough exam to check the function of your jaw joint and the alignment of your bite. If we find that TMD is the likely cause of your discomfort, we can discuss simple, non-invasive solutions. This might include a custom-fit night guard to protect your teeth and relax your jaw muscles while you sleep, or other therapies to help your bite find a more harmonious position.
You don’t need to let another headache steal a moment of your day. Our team, including Dr. Evans, Dr. Ziemba, and Dr. Lucido, has years of experience in helping patients connect the dots between their oral health and their overall comfort. We’re here to listen to your symptoms and help you find a path to real, lasting relief.
